John Dickie III, age 84, of Parkville, MD, and a former long-term resident of Bel Air, MD, passed away from complications of COVID on December 25, 2020, at Seasons Hospice at Franklin Square Hospital, Rosedale, MD. Born September 29, 1936, in Orange, NJ, to the late John Dickie, Jr., and the late M. Anne (Guppy) Dickie, he grew up in East Orange and West Orange. He graduated from West Orange High School in 1954. In 1958, John received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at the Army Chemical Center, Edgewood, Maryland, now known as the Edgewood Area of Aberdeen Proving Ground. After his army service, he stayed on at Edgewood in civil service as a project engineer working in chemical defense systems research. He retired from there in 1988. John was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bel Air, where he was Secretary, then Chairman, of the Board of Trustees. He held leadership roles in a number of other organizations, including serving as a Director of the Matcom Credit Union as it transitioned to Freedom Credit Union. He and his wife, Virginia Dickie, attended yearly national conventions of the National Association of Federal Credit Unions. John also served in the capacity of treasurer, secretary, and president of the Watergate Condominium Association, where he and Virginia had a much-loved residence in Ocean City, MD. He also was treasurer of the Leeswood (Bel Air) Community Association. Perhaps John’s greatest contributions to civic life were made through his 50-year relationship with the Bel Air Lions Club, where he developed many close friendships with fellow Lions, some of whom joined a long-time couples’ bridge club which has continued to meet over many decades. In the Lions Club John held multiple positions, including Treasurer, Bulletin Editor, Sight Conservation Committee Chairman and member of the Board of Directors. He participated in many Club fundraising activities to provide services to the community, as well as civic events such as Bel Air’s Fourth of July celebrations. In recognition of his many years of service to the Lions and the community, John received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. John’s many interests included history and literature, in addition to classical music and opera. For years, he attended Baltimore Symphony Orchestra concerts. He also loved science and making detailed models of WWII-era military craft. He shared all of his varied interests with his family and friends. In his later years, he enjoyed World War II movies and Sudoku. With Virginia, he was an avid traveler for three decades, going to France, Scotland (the birthplace of John’s father), the U.S. west coast, and most especially Bermuda, where he and Virginia honeymooned in 1962 and returned 56 times. In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his namesake, John Dickie IV and his wife, Marissa Napoli. John also is survived by daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Dickie Ward, and her husband, Arthur K. Ward, Jr. He leaves behind granddaughters Caroline Eleanor Dickie and Anne Elizabeth Ward. the family will be hosting s celebration of life will be held at a later date. the livestreaming can be found at https://firstpresbelair.org/worship/ In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to First Presbyterian Church, 224 North Main Street, Bel Air, MD, 21014, or the Lions Club of Bel Air Lions, P.O.
