Joe Edward Wilson

July 20, 1945 — June 29, 2022

Joe E. Wilson passed away at age 76 on June 29, 2022.  He was the son of Rissie Christine and Estile Wilson.  Joe is survived by his wife Jean Wilson; son, Matthew (Natalie) Wilson; two grandchildren, Callahan Wilson and Elias Wilson; brother, Charles Wilson; and many nieces and nephews.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Nancy Snead and Christine Wilson, and a brother, Douglas Wilson.


Joe grew up in Anne Arundel County.  He attended Catonsville Community College and Mount Royal Academy where he studied for the ministry.  He attained a Bachelor of Arts degree in American history and elementary education from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and a Master of Science degree from The Johns Hopkins University in administration and supervision.  Joe was an officer of the Johns Hopkins chapter of the Phi Delta Kappa educational honor society. 


Joe was an educator in Baltimore City and County Public Schools for 35 years, spending 24 years as a principal.  He began the principalship at Armistead Gardens Elementary School.  At Mount Washington Elementary, Joe led the school to receiving a Redbook Magazine award for being selected one of the best one hundred elementary schools in the nation.  In Baltimore County, Joe was principal at Hillcrest Elementary School and Ridgely Middle School.  He retired from Edmondson Heights Elementary School in 2006.  He was a strong advocate for all children, especially those underprivileged and with special needs.  He was a recipient of the Best Principal Award by the Towson Times in 2000. 


Joe was a man of strong faith and an active member of Mountain Christian Church.  He volunteered regularly at Tabitha’s House in Fallston, Maryland, serving families and children in need throughout Harford County.


Joe enjoyed reading, history, sports, music, theater, traveling, and photography.  His most treasured role was Pop Pop, playing with his grandsons whom he absolutely adored.  He took great pride in his son and admired what a wonderful husband and father he has become.   Joe was known for his affable nature, genuine interest in everyone he met, kindness, generosity, and advocacy for children.   His love and dedication to his family, friends, and school communities will never be forgotten.
