James Roger Mcconnell Sr.

May 27, 1919 — September 4, 2007

JAMES ROGER McCONNELL, SR., age 88, of Bel Air, MD, died at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD, on September 4, 2007. Born in Mansfield, Ohio, he was the son of the late Paul and Grace Arting McConnell and husband of the late Patricia Palmer McConnell. A graduate of Washington and Lee University, he was a member of Beta Theta Pi at Washington and Lee. In 1971 after 30 years of service, he retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served during WWII as a flight instructor for four engine bombers and during the Korean Conflict where he was a squadron commander in Europe. He was a QB.

Mr. McConnell had been an executive at Globe Steel Abrasive Co. in Mansfield, Ohio, President at Pangborn Corp. in Hagerstown, Maryland, Group Vice President at Carborundum in Niagara, New York, President at Reed Tool Corporation in Sherman, Texas, President at West Virginia Armature Corporation in Blue Field, West Virginia, and Comptroller at York International Corporation in York, Pennsylvania.

Mr. McConnell was an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Distinguished Eagle Scout. He lettered in track in high school and college. He was a member of Bel Air United Methodist Church and played the piano.

Mr. McConnell is survived by two sons, James Roger McConnell, Jr. of Hagerstown, Maryland and Michael Paul McConnell of Phoenix, Maryland; a daughter, Karen Lee Downing of Akron, Ohio, a sister, Elsie McConnell Ripper of Florida; five grandchildren, William Bradley Downing of Fort Myers, Florida, Richard Todd Downing of Akron, Ohio, Amy Lee Dawson of Akron, Ohio; Kate Arting McConnell of Ithaca, New York and Patrick Rhodes McConnell, of Hagerstown, Maryland; and eight great grandchildren.
