Doris Gentry

September 5, 1938 — April 1, 2021

Doris (Dot) Loretta Cook Gentry passed away peacefully on the morning of April 1, 2021 at her home in Las Cruces, NM. She was surrounded by her daughter Donna and adopted grandsons James and David Pease.

Dot was born in Marion, VA on September 5, 1938 to Charles Cook and Blanche Sexton and graduated from Bel Air High School, Harford County in 1956.

During her early years, Dot had many fun jobs. These included working at Robbie Wallis Pizza Shop, Boyd & Fulford as a soda jerk, Bata Shoe, and of course the C&P Telephone Company.

Her life changed forever when she married Bill Gentry and had her one and only daughter, Donna Gentry. From that point forward she was devoted to family and creating memories that will fill our hearts forever.

Her love for Elvis came to life with a room in her home devoted to all things related to the King. In her spare time, Dot loved to do puzzles and crafts, play bingo, add to her many eclectic collections, and spend summer with her family! It wasn’t unusual to catch her at the 25 cent slots or enjoying the casino buffets. Dot could create a Christmas wonderland like no other, but our favorite treat was the Christmas fudge and pies that she would share with family and friends. She will always be remembered for her infectious smile, sense of humor, and compassion.

She is survived by her daughter Donna Gentry; stepdaughter Carol Bower; sisters Violet Johnson (Escondido, CA), Millie Cooper (Bel Air, MD), and Joan Farmer (Clayton, AL); brothers Tom Cook (Bel Air, MD) and Bruce Cook (Bossier City, LA); and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dot was preceded in death by her husband Billie T. Gentry and brothers Jim Cook, Otis Cook, Fred Cook, and Dean Cook.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to your local women’s shelter or food bank.
