Charles Dayton Saffer

October 17, 1937 — December 17, 2003

CHARLES D. SAFFER, of Edgewood died December 17, 2003 at his home in Edgewood, MD. He was 66. Born in Paoli, Indiana, and a resident of Harford County since 1977, he was the husband of Wanda B. Saffer.

He retired from the U.S. Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD as Sergeant First Class after 20 years of service. He received the Army’s Air Medal for Heroism in the Republic of Vietnam; the Army Meritorious Service Medal while serving at the HQ, U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Vicenza, Italy; the Army Meritorious Service Medal while serving at the HQ, U.S. Army Ordnance Center & School, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD; the Army National Defense Service Medal; The Army Commendation Medal; the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm; and five Army Good Conduct Medals. Mr. Saffer also retired from Civil Service at Aberdeen Proving Ground after 12 years as a Senior Instructor. He then established his own business, C & W Express, and for four years, worked as owner and operator and co-driver, along with his wife, Wanda. He was contracted by the Roberts Express/Federal Express and Tri-State Expediting Service and traveled extensively across the U.S. Mr. Saffer also traveled for pleasure after retiring.

He was a Master Mason, member of the Masonic Lodge #340 of Jeffersonville, IN and a member of the American Legion. He was an active member of the Gunpowder Neck Boating Activity in Edgewood Area of Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD since 1978. In his younger years, he was a Fire Fighter at the Bonnie Doone Volunteer Fire Department in Fayetteville, NC.

His most enjoyment was being with his family and talking with friends and neighbors. His interests were traveling and looking forward to the next Road Trip, boating and fishing, talking with his fellow anglers and watching NASCAR races, his favorite driver being Jeff Gordon.

Mr. Saffer is survived by his wife, Wanda B. Kelien Saffer; two daughters, Donna Geisel of Edgewood; Rebecca D. DeLapp and her husband, James of Bishopville, MD; four grandchildren, Christopher and Steven Geisel; Hallie and Garrett DeLapp. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Bessie Jennings, and brother-in-law Pryor Austin Jennings, III of Louisville, KY; his sister-in-law, Barbara Bergen of Fayetteville, NC; and two aunts, Helen Kelly of Ft. Myers, FL; and Estella Floyd of Springsfield, IL. He was predeceased by his parents, Courtney and Hallie Saffer of Jeffersonville, IN.
