Barbara Hull Lake

October 15, 1932 — March 14, 2022

Barbara Hull Lake, born Barbara Ann Hull October 15, 1932, passed away peacefully March 14, 2022 at the age of 89. She is preceded by her parents Frederick Lawrence Cornelius Hull and Catherine P. Strode, her loving husband of 59 years Paul Saunders Lake, Jr. and her oldest son Paul S. Lake III and daughter in law Tina S. Lake.


She is survived by her sons, James Lake who shares her birthday, and Stephen Lake and daughter in law Jatana Lake, her daughter Melody (Lake) Burrill and her husband Matthew W. Burrill Sr. who she called her fourth son, grandchildren, Megan (Lake) Delzer and her husband Robert Delzer, Matthew W. Burrill Jr. and his wife Jessica Burrill, Rachel Lake and her partner Richard Berry, Alex Lake, Mark Burrill and his wife Kelsey Burrill, Michael Burrill, Jamie and Aaron Greenfield, Ryan Vaught, Nina Garrett and her husband Robert and many beloved great grandchildren.


                Barbara married the love of her life at the age of 17, after he wowed her singing and playing the trumpet. She was an amazing pianist, playing an studying at Peabody Institute and had the singing voice of an angel. While raising four kids, she played the organ at many churches, sang in choirs, directed the choir, and shared her passion for music with her children. She and Paul loved to dance, they danced like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, never missing a beat or step.


                Barbara taught piano lessons out of her home. She graduated from Towson State University with a bachelor’s degree. She then attended John Hopkins University, where she received her master’s degree. She was a sister of Alpha Delta KAI, where she forged lifetime friendships with fellow sisters.  She was also a member of the Mensa Society.


                After graduating from John Hopkins, she began teaching at William Paca, Old Post Road Elementary, where she spent her entire career of over 20 years, touching the lives of many students. She was known as a tough but extremely fair and caring teacher. It was there that wonderful friendships were born.


                Barb sat with Ethyl Kennedy at a Presidential Inauguration, was friends with the former Congressman Clarence Long as well as former Senator Paul Sarbanes and was active in politics.  She loved playing cards, having weekly bridge games for over 50 years with her best friends Betty and Bob Lake and after Paul passed, continued her competitive card games with James, Melody and Matt.


                She loved her condo at the beach, spending many summers in her corner unit, making great friends, talking to everyone who walked by and kept dog treats for all the dogs that walked by.


                Nothing brought her more joy than her family. She was fiercely protective and always put them first. She was loving, intelligent, compassionate, kind, strong and beautiful. She was a strong Christian and loved her church. Anyone who had the honor of knowing her, loved her.
