Alva Mary Rose Amoss Mcmullen

August 26, 1937 — December 14, 2022

Alva Mary Rose Amoss McMullen of Fallston, MD and Naples, FL, passed away on December 14, 2022. Born at Johns Hopkins Hospital by cesarean, August 25, 1937, she was the daughter of the late David H. Amoss and Rose B. Famous Amoss of Fallston, MD. Alva Mary lived all her life on the same road, Pleasantville Road in Fallston, MD. She enjoyed the green farmland and cattle that still surround her home and lived across from her late grandparents, and her cousins, Clara Mae, and Willard Amoss. Alva Mary watched her children and grandchildren grow up over the hill and through the woods on her parents' farm. They attended the same school, Youth's Benefit, where she and her mother taught. She loved and respected the rich farmland of Harford County. She was active in Girl Scouts and the 4-H Clubs, being a 4-H All Star participating in 4-H projects, 4-H camp at Rocks, and the Harford County Fair at the Harford County Racetrack where Harford Mall is now.

Alva Mary graduated from Bel Air High School in 1955, enjoying the art classes and performing as a Majorette in the Bel Air High School Band. After graduating from Towson State Teachers College with a B.S. and, later a master's in education, she got her 30 plus in Education, attending Johns Hopkins University. Alva Mary taught second grade for 30 years at Bel Air and Youth's Benefit Elementary Schools, at times along with her mother, Rose Amoss, who had taught 43 years in Harford County. Alva Mary was active in politics with her first husband the late Senator W. H. Amoss, who died in 1997. She was interested in the history of Harford Co., being a descendant of William Amoss, who settled and built Mt. Soma in 1715 on Bel Air Rd. She co-authored with Alice Harlan Remsberg several booklets on Historic Fallston and Harford County. She enjoyed traveling globally with her husband Rolland D. McMullen and spent winters in their condo in Naples, Florida. Ron died in 2016. Alva Mary's Catholic faith was always an important part of her life. She was a long-time member of St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church in Fallston.

Alva Mary is survived by her daughter, Catherine Rose Amoss Babcock and her husband, Robert Babcock of Fallston and Key West; her son, William David Amoss and wife Mary of Fallston; and her stepdaughter, Nancy McMullen of Darlington. She was the proud grandmother to Hannah (Justin) Watt, and William, Mike (Allison), and Benjamin (Theresa) Amoss, Alexander and Kyle (Yiming) Mirabile and step-grandmother to Ryan (Karen) Babcock, and Caitlyn (Logan) Carlisle. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Esther, Phoebe, and Sarah Amoss, Rose Mary and Annabelle Watt, Eleanor, Jackson, and Samuel Amoss; and her step-great-grandchild, Lainey Babcock.
