Della Handy Watters

June 29, 1935 — March 6, 2018

Della Handy Watters, age 82, of Bel Air, MD passed away on March 6, 2018 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Born in Concord, NC, on June 29, 1935 she was the daughter of Andrew and Della (Brown) Handy. Della graduated from Logan High School and attended Barber- Scotia College in Concord, NC for a year before transferring to North Carolina Central University, in Durham, NC, where she met the love of her life and dancing partner, John “Pipe” Watters. They were married on September 4, 1955.

After being a housewife and raising their five children for a number of years, she worked as a sales associate at Montgomery Ward at the Harford Mall in Bel Air. As a sales associate, she received numerous awards for excellence in sales. She retired from Montgomery Ward as a Department Manager.

She liked to sew, enjoyed church, loved her plants, shopping, and going on cruises. Della loved her kids with a passion. She loved spending Christmas with her family, photos of her family, singing in the Ames United Methodist choir, cooking, and genealogy. She also liked a good glass of wine, or a bottle of beer, and enjoyed the movies. Della was a fan of sports and supported all of her children in their academic and athletic pursuits. She attended as many games as possible and ensured the kids stayed on the honor roll. She was also a fan of the Baltimore Colts, Baltimore Ravens, and the Baltimore Orioles and spent many days and nights watching and talking sports with “Pipe” and the kids. Della also became a fan of golf, ice skating, and loved to watch “Dancing with the Stars”.

Della is survived by her husband of 63 years, John Wesley Watters; daughter, Deirdre (Fernando) Watters Perry-Baden; four sons, John (Michelle) Wesley Watters, III, Jeffrey (Sheila) Winfred Watters, Jerome (Teresa) Wendell Watters, James (Vanessa) Warrenell Watters; brother, Patrick (Margaret) Handy; sister-in-law, Beryl Handy; grandchildren, John, Michael, Jeffrey, Dequinne, Amanda, Johnathan, Ashley, Chase, Sophia, Joshua; and great grandchildren, Asher and John Perry II.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Clarence Handy.
