Howard K. McComas III Senior Funeral Director howard@mccomasfuneralhome.com

Howard K. McComas III was born on December 6, 1943 in Harford County, Maryland. He is the son of Howard Kennard McComas, Jr. and Nena Sewell McComas. Howard was raised in Abingdon at the old McComas Funeral Home, one block from the present McComas Funeral Home building. Howard graduated from Edgewood High School in June 1961 and began serving his funeral director and embalmer apprenticeship under his father at the McComas Funeral Home. He attended Eckles College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia and graduated in March 1964.

 

Howard is very active in his community. He has been a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church since 1954 and currently serves on the Board of Trustees. In 1959 Howard became a member of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Company where he is still a member and served as Assistant Chief for five years in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Howard, along with his wife Judy, live in Abingdon. 

 

In 1971, Howard and his mother Nena, formed the Howard K. McComas III Funeral Home at the present location.

Born and raised in Abingdon, Howard is part of the 6th generation of McComas’ in Funeral Service.  He is a 1985 graduate of Edgewood High School.  After high school Howard attended Lynchburg College and Appalachian State University in North Carolina where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. 

 

Howard is active in the community having served on the Board of Trustees of Harford Community College. Currently he serves on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Harford County as well as on the Foundation Board for Harford Community College.

 

His greatest joy is being involved in the community and spending time with his family.

 

He lives in Bel Air, Maryland along with his wife Cheryl and sons Howard V (Quentin) and Reagan.

Being part of the sixth consecutive generation of funeral directors in her family, Holly has grown up around the family business.  Born and raised in Abingdon, Maryland, Holly is a 1988 graduate of Edgewood High School and a 1992 graduate of Salisbury State University.  Holly attended Catonsville Community College earning an A.A. degree in Mortuary Science and has been a licensed funeral director and embalmer since 1994.  Holly is also a Certified Funeral Practitioner through the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice.  Holly is a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, Selected Independent Funeral Homes, and Delmarva Funeral Directors Association.  Holly is also an active member of the Maryland State Funeral Directors Association where she has held many offices.  Holly is also a member of the Maryland State Funeral Directors Disaster Response Team, where her father was one of the founding members.  Holly has been extensively trained in Mass Fatalities Incident Response and hopes that is all the experience she will ever receive in this field, God willing, will be in the training itself.

 

Though Holly has put her competition days behind her, she continues her passion for horses and riding.  She finds joy in helping others through difficult times and is committed to carrying on the McComas tradition for her family serving your family.  As part of the continuing care of helping the families after the funeral, Holly has enjoyed programs at the funeral home such as the Widow/Widowers Bus Trip to Longwood Gardens and the Annual Service of Remembrance.  With the compassion instilled by her ancestors, especially her late grandmother, Nena S. McComas, she strives to make a more meaningful experienced for families served.

Stephen A. Hughes was born, and grew up in, Harford Co., and graduated from Edgewood High School. Steve began his employment with the McComas Funeral Home, P.A. in 1972. He has earned his license as an Embalmer and Certified Funeral Service Practitioner. He graduated from Catonsville Community College, with a degree in Mortuary Science, where he has served on the Advisory Board. Steve attends St. Francis Catholic Church and is a member of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Company. He and his wife, Laureen, have raised two sons, Adam and Ryan, and one daughter, Shelby. They have been very active in Youth Community Activities with the Emmorton Recreational Council, serving in various capacities in Baseball, Softball, Swimming, and Basketball. Steve has also served as a Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Cub Scout Den Leader, and as a Harford County 4-H Assistant Leader. Steve is also a member of the Maryland State Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association

 

Since 1996, Steve has assisted families in selecting and designing monuments and memorials to be placed at the site of their family members.

Ryan was born and raised in Abingdon, MD. At an early age, Ryan became familiar with McComas Funeral Home. His father, Stephen Hughes, is currently the Director of Funeral Service Operations and has been with McComas Funeral Home since 1972. Ryan began working at McComas Funeral Home in the spring of 2000 as a Funeral Service Associate.

 

He graduated from Bel Air High School in 2002 and participated in the Work Study Program his senior year working at McComas Funeral Home. After high school, Ryan completed prerequisite courses at Harford Community College and continued to obtain his AA in Mortuary Science from CCBC Catonsville.

 

Ryan served his apprenticeship at McComas Funeral Home and became a Licensed Funeral Director in 2006. In 2008, Ryan returned to college to pursue his RN license. He graduated from the CCBC Essex RN program in 2011, and worked full time for two years on the ICU Stepdown Unit at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. While pursuing his second degree and working as an RN, Ryan maintained a part time position with McComas Funeral Home. After realizing a greater passion to serve bereaved families, Ryan returned to full time employment at McComas Funeral Home in October of 2013.

 

Ryan resides in Bel Air with his wife Agatha and daughter Emma.

Charles A. Emge, Jr. Senior Funeral Director charles@mccomasfuneralhome.com

Charles A. Emge, Jr. is a 1985 graduate of Edgewood High School. He has worked for the Panasonic Warehouse, United Parcel Service as a pre-load supervisor and the Klein’s Grocery Store chain in various management positions. These different career backgrounds never would have pointed in the direction of funeral service; if it was not for the opportunity given by longtime friend Howard K. McComas IV. Charlie has been employed with the funeral home since 1994. He graduated in 1997 from Catonsville Community College with a Mortuary Science Degree.  With over 20 years of experience at McComas Funeral Home and working in his hometown community this “funeral service” experience has been extremely rewarding to Charlie to help those he may know.

 

Married in 1998 to Lisa Ann Siptroth, They reside in Forest Hill with their daughter, Kelly Ann and their sons Eric Michael and Matthew James. He enjoys supporting his children’s interest in sports.

Born and raised in Baltimore County, a graduate of Perry Hall High School, Class of 2000.  After graduating from high school she starting working at a local funeral home as a receptionist and funeral assistant, while attending classes at Essex Community College.  After completing her prerequisites courses she then transferred to Catonsville Community College to complete her A.A. degree in Mortuary Science.  She received her Mortician License in 2006.  After graduating, Melissa worked for a Baltimore County family owned and operated funeral home before joining the McComas Funeral Home in 2016. She has been a Member of the NFDA since 2006.

 

When she’s not serving the families at McComas, she enjoys spending quality time with her husband Charlie;  they enjoy the vacations that they try to take yearly to a new place each time, they are trying to make it to each of the fifty states.  So far her favorite vacation was when they were married in 2009 on the beach of the Outer Banks, NC.  Some of the things she enjoy on her time away are the outdoors, weekend trips and reading.

 

Melissa and her husband Charlie live in Abingdon along with their Red Belly Parrot Dupree.  They have been Harford County residents since 2006.

Kim was raised in northeastern Pennsylvania. She is a 1988 graduate of Dallas High School, attended Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and received her AAS in Mortuary Science from Simmons Institute of Mortuary Science in Syracuse, NY in 1991. After graduation, Kim served her apprenticeship in Norristown, PA and obtained her Pennsylvania funeral directors license in March 1993. After moving to Maryland in 2001, she fulfilled the requirements to secure her Maryland funeral directors license.  In 2014, she received her AA from Harford Community College in Paralegal Studies.

 

Kim is active in the Harford County community serving as a board member for the Chesapeake Professional Women's Network (CPWN) and had previously served on the board of the Geriatric Assistance and Information Network (GAIN). She also serves on the CPWN fashion show committee and served as its chairperson in 2011 and 2012. She is a former member of the Mason-Dixon Business Association, BNI, and the planning committee for the ARC Northern Chesapeake Region's annual After D'Arc event.  Currently, she is heading the End of Life Caregiver’s Group, which is a group designed to  bring together people who represent various organizations that work with people during each stage of the later segment of one’s life to share experiences and educate one another.

 

Kim lives in Abingdon with her husband, Jeff and her children, John and Zoe.  She has 2 dogs, Sadie and Dollie.

Kasi N. Hughes is a 2010 Perryville High School graduate. She grew up in Abingdon and since 2001, has been a resident of Port Deposit in Cecil County. After experiencing the amount of dedication, care and support given by the funeral staff at her grandmother’s funeral in 2008, she took an interest in the field. She began the Mortuary Science Program at CCBC in the Spring of 2012. She graduated in August 2015 and began working at McComas Funeral Home where she then completed her apprenticeship. She has been a licensed funeral director since June 2016.  In her spare time, she enjoys taking care of her two Great Danes, Duck and Purple. They are her kids. She also enjoys oil painting.

Graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1999 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business. She then went to Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science where she graduated in 2000. She became a licensed mortician in Maryland in 2001 while working in Montgomery County, and has also been licensed in Ohio, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

 

In 2005 she received her insurance license, and then started helping people to pre-plan their funerals.

 

Melissa and her husband Ken moved to Bel Air in 2005. They have 2 sons, Jaxon, born in 2007 and Wade born in 2012.

 

Melissa joined the McComas Funeral Home in 2007.

Judy was born and raised on a dairy farm in Pylesville and is a graduate of North Harford High School.  In addition to serving the funeral home as a funeral director, with over three decades of experience as a lawyer, Judy provides legal advice to the families being cared for by McComas Funeral Homes. She is a graduate of the University of Delaware (B.A), Towson University (M.S. Education), the University of Maryland (J.D.), the University of Baltimore (M.S. Taxation), and the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.  Judy loves school and is currently enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Maryland to develop advanced and practical skills needed to provide compassionate care to those dealing with dying, death and grief. Judy lives in Abingdon with her husband, Howard McComas, III.

Lee Tooman joined the McComas Funeral Home team in 2011, serving as a Funeral Services Associate and as a member of the Memorial Tribute, Aftercare and Cremation Teams.  Lee is a certified cremation operator currently serving in the capacity as Director Cremation Operations.

 

Growing up in Ohio, Lee served in the U.S. Air Force for 6-1/2 years before attending Medaille College in Buffalo, NY, where he received a Bachelor of Science, Liberal Studies degree majoring in business.  After college, Lee spent 35+ years working in the corporate world in facilities, property and project management.  During his military and corporate years, Lee and his family lived overseas as well as in 7 different states. 

 

Over his life, Lee has volunteered extensively in the churches he joined.  In addition, he has volunteered as a Cub & Boy Scout leader and served as an EMT & 911 dispatcher with a volunteer fire company.  Lee has also volunteered in various capacities with several civic organizations.

 

Lee’s wife, Patti, is also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a Funeral Services Associate with the McComas Funeral Home team.  They have a son, Patrick, and a daughter, Shannon, as well as two lovely twin granddaughters, Lauren and Liliana.  Lee and his family live in Bel Air.

 

For relaxation, Lee enjoys his retirement from the corporate world by reading, working on his family tree and traveling, especially cruising.

Robert Sherman, a lifelong resident of Harford County, is a 1964 graduate of Bel Air High School. He served in public law enforcement for over sixteen years with the Harford County Sheriff’s Department and Maryland State Police. A licensed auctioneer since 1969, he was employed by Michael Fox International and GoIndustry as an auctioneer and Director of North American Operations.

 

Bob and his wife, Carol, reside in Havre de Grace and are members of Bel Air United Methodist Church. They have a son, daughter and seven grandchildren.

 

Bob attended Harford Community College, Loyola College, Baltimore, MD and received a certificate as a criminal analyst from Anna Capa Science, Santa Barbara, CA.

 

In October of 2012, Bob completed a two year course of study at Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.

 

Bob joined McComas Funeral Home in 2009 where he currently serves as a Certified Funeral Celebrant.

Lee Tooman

Lee’s wife, Patti, is also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a Funeral Services Associate with the McComas Funeral Home team.  They have a son, Patrick, and a daughter, Shannon, as well as two lovely twin granddaughters, Lauren and Liliana.  Lee and his family live in Bel Air.

 

For relaxation, Lee enjoys his retirement from the corporate world by reading, working on his family tree and traveling, especially cruising.

Robert Sherman, a lifelong resident of Harford County, is a 1964 graduate of Bel Air High School. He served in public law enforcement for over sixteen years with the Harford County Sheriff’s Department and Maryland State Police. A licensed auctioneer since 1969, he was employed by Michael Fox International and GoIndustry as an auctioneer and Director of North American Operations.

 

Bob and his wife, Carol, reside in Havre de Grace and are members of Bel Air United Methodist Church. They have a son, daughter and seven grandchildren.

 

Bob attended Harford Community College, Loyola College, Baltimore, MD and received a certificate as a criminal analyst from Anna Capa Science, Santa Barbara, CA.

 

In October of 2012, Bob completed a two year course of study at Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.

 

Bob joined McComas Funeral Home in 2009 where he currently serves as a Certified Funeral Celebrant.
